Healthy Turf without Fertilizers
Any agronomist will tell you that truly healthy soil will produce healthy and abundant plant life without the need for chemical fertilizers. The problem in most communities today is that continued fertilizer applications have destroyed the natural microbial activity in the soil, thus requiring additional fertilizer inputs to provide nutrients to the plant life.
Fertilizers in soil are like steroids in humans: They have a short-term, almost immediate and desirable result, but in the long term can be extremely hazardous to your health. In the case of fertilizers, chemicals seep into groundwater and can run off into rivers, lakes, streams and oceans, much to the detriment of those bodies of water and the wildlife that they support. Chemical fertilizers are heavy polluters, period. Because of this pollutive effect, environmental regulations are increasingly oppressive regarding fertilizer use and very punitive when negative environmental impact is found.
The solution is to improve the health of the soil by adding a healthy dose of microbial activity, thus remediating the soil to a healthy state that supports plant growth without the need for fertilizers. How does it work? Microbes are a part of every living thing. Microbes help you digest your food, help cows product milk; in fact, every living thing involves microbes at a very fundamental level. Microbes in soil increase the nitrogen, phosphorus and micro-mineral availability in plants, and play a key role in both the production of plant vitamins and hormones and in inhibiting plant pathogens. Without microbes, there would be no life. However, there are billions, perhaps trillions of species of microbes. Some microbes consume petroleum, as we saw in the Gulf oil spill, some microbes eat grease in restaurant grease traps. There is nothing that happens on the planet with any living thing that does not involve microbial activity. However, not all microbes work in harmony, so it is key to find microbes that are not only compatible, but perform different functions in the soil. Researchers at Michigan State University were able to identify over 30 such soil microbes, and the tests they performed over a three-year period on over 200 plots, demonstrated that this unique combination of microbes is able to improve the health and yield of any plant, from 25% to 400% - without fertilizer! It doesn’t matter if you are growing grass, flowers, tomatoes or rice, high microbial activity is the key to plant health and productivity.
Why hasn’t this been available before? Previous microbial formulations have been single-purpose formulas, primarily because nobody could figure out how to get multiple microbes to perform multiple functions in a synergistic, harmonious way. That is the real breakthrough achieved at Michigan State – multiple species of microbes performing multiple functions and not attacking each other! Secondly, nobody has been able to figure out how to create such a microbial solution in a concentration sufficient to be effective in the soil. In the AgriBiotic Microbics with SumaGrow formula, there are over one trillion colony-forming units (cfu) per milliliter, and we have seen concentrations as high as 1017, or one hundred thousand trillion microbes per milliliter!
Other benefits: Healthy soil retains water better than unhealthy soil, so utilizing our microbial formula will result in reducing water usage between 20-25%. Not only can water be expensive, it can be even more expensive when you have to use pumps in areas requiring irrigation systems. Another benefit is lower cost. Chemical fertilizers are petro-chemical based, so prices reflect the price of oil; AgriBiotic Microbics with SumaGrow has no relationship at all to the price of oil. Microbes are cultured naturally, and they multiply in your soil as well. Currently, most users of our microbics are seeing savings of 40-80% vs. fertilizer. Last, once the soil achieves a healthy state of microbial activity, frequent applications of AgriBiotic Microbics with SumaGrow are not required. An annual application at the beginning of the growing season is all that is required in most cases; in some cases, two applications work best.
How does one get started? Unless there is some compelling reason to conduct a test, and we can’t think of one, it is very easy to implement our microbial application process. In the first growing season, reduce fertilizer inputs by at least 50% and replace with AgriBiotic Microbics with SumaGrow. In the second growing season, reduce fertilizer inputs to zero. From time to time you may find patches of plant life that have been abused in some way, and a short shot of fertilizer is a good way to achieve a quick fix. Keep in mind, however, that chemical fertilizers will ultimately kill microbial activity, so use it sparingly, if at all, and be sure to re-introduce microbics to that soil patch within three weeks of whatever fertilizer you applied.
The science is abundantly clear. The research and testing at Michigan State, a world-class research and agricultural institution, is more than sufficient to prove the viability of using a concentrated microbial formula to replace fertilizer. It enhances soil health and reduces a major source of air, ground and water pollution. There is truly no good reason for delaying the implementation of a microbial soil enhancement solution to replace chemical fertilizers on every park, golf course, cemetery, roadway or farm that you currently own or manage.
